This documentary delves into the early development of the West Village neighborhood, where Marie's Crisis is located, to discover how it came to be an actual village within the vastness of New York City. Historians, residents and real estate experts talk about how the labrinthine streets and the low-rise buidlings add an intimacy and a privacy that attracts artists and gives Marie's its 'only-in-the-village' character. We also discover the reasons behind the Village's descent in the 60's and 70's, which allowed Marie's to flourish to become the institution it is today. And later we get personal insights into the AIDS epidemic and the following gentrification that now makes the West Village some of the most expensive real estate in the world with Marie's as one of its key attractions.
